Scientists have learned that there are the periods in life when certain parts of brain can learn information easier at other times.  They call these periods "learning ports." Many of these ports appear and disappear in the first few years of a child’s life. يؤدي تعلم الرياضيات إلى تنمية التفكير المنطقي وتلعب رياض الأطفال دوراً مهماً في ذلك. وينظم السلوك المنطقي الأولي (أي نشاطات الرياضيات) عمل الذهن الضروري للحياة العملية وبدونه لا يعمل الذكاء الاجتماعي. فالتصنيف والترتيب والعدد الكمي والعدد الترتيبي تعني الأحداث والمعلومات والمكان والزمان في الحياة اليومية. إن نمو التفكير المنطقي في رياض الأطفال يمر بتنمية الحواس. ونستطيع أن ننمي الحواس والتفكير المنطقي بنشاطات عديدة تتناول الحواس جميعاً من نظر وسمع وشم ولمس وذوق. وتبدأ هذه النشاطات بتعرف الأطفال على الأشياء المتشابهة والأشياء المختلفة، بالإضافة إلى أن الوسائل المستخدمة تساعد في اكتساب المفردات اللغوية الدقيقة. واستخدام الحواس في عملية الإدراك يساعد في تكوين الصور العقلية وفي إدراك المحيط وفي نمو اللغة والتفاعل مع الآخرين. ويقول العلماء بأن السنوات الخمس الأولى في حياة الطفل مهمة جداً لبناء دماغه، وكل ما يفعله الوالدان والمعلمون يساعد على تهيئة وإعداد دماغ الطفل للتفكير والشعور والحركة والتعلم. وهذه هي السنوات التي يمكنكم أن تحدثوا فيها فرقاً كبيراً في نمو الطفل ومستقبله. ومن أجل هذا النمو، وضع هذا الكتاب للبيت والمدرسة، فالوالدان الحريصان على بناء دماغ طفلهما يمكنهما استخدام هذا الكتاب في البيت أيضاً، ذلك أن دماغ الطفل عند الولادة تكون بعض خلاياه (100 بليون خلية) مترابطة وموصولة، غير أن معظمها لا يكون كذلك. وخلال السنوات الأولى من الحياة (وما بعد ذلك بمعدل سرعة أقل) يعمل دماغ الطفل بجد على إقامة روابط بين هذه الخلايا. وإقامة الروابط يتوقف على مدى اهتمامنا بتعليم الطفل أموراً مفيدة. وتطور الجهاز العصبي يتوقف على نشاطه، أي على المثيرات التي يتلقاها من المحيط، فالمحيط الغني بالمثيرات يؤدي إلى زيادة الوصلات العصبية. فعندما ندرك موضوعاً أو شيئاً فإن العناصر المكونة لهذا الشيء تنشط مجموعة من الخلايا العصبية والتي تنشط بدورها مجموعة أخرى من الخلايا مرتبطة ببعض عناصر الموضوع التي سبق تنشيطها في تجارب سابقة، بحيث أن حضور أي موضوع يؤدي إلى نشاط في الشبكة العصبية. ولا يملك الدماغ عند الولادة أي معلومات عن العالم ويتم تكوينه بالتعلم. والتعلم يؤدي إلى تكوين الشبكات العصبية. والإثارة المتكررة لسلسلة من الخلايا العصبية يزيد من نشاطها وإثارتها، وغياب الإثارة يؤدي إلى إغلاق نقطة التقاء الخلايا، ونشاط الخلايا يؤثر على وظائفها. ونقول هنا بأن استخدام هذا الكتاب يؤدي إلى تنشيط وإثارة الخلايا العصبية ويجعل الدماغ يقوم بوظائفه بصورة أفضل. واستخدام هذا الكتاب باكراً يؤدي إلى بناء وصلات عصبية، إذ يخبرنا العلماء أن هناك أوقاتاً تستطيع فيها أجزاء معينة من الدماغ أن تتعلم معلومات جديدة بسهولة أكبر من أن تتعلمها في وقت آخر. ويطلق العلماء على هذه الأوقات اسم "نوافذ فرص التعلم". بعض هذه النوافذ تفتح ثم تغلق أثناء السنوات القليلة الأولى من الحياة.
